SPECIAL PROJECT -  COUNT-DOWN CHAIN

I would like to share a project some you may like to try. If you have a friend who loves to quilt and is graduating or retiring (or some other event), you could make and give a 'COUNT-DOWN CHAIN' to count down to that special day. The theory is you make a fabric chain like you would a paper chain when you were in Kindergarten, then each day leading up to that special day, he/she would remove a link. I used 2 1/2" strips of fabric so that as a link was taken away each day, there would be a strip of fabric to be used in a fun project. For my friend, I decided to use the "Frosted Window Panes" pattern from Villa Rosa (we have many 2 1/2" strip-friendly patterns from Villa Rosa at Sew Fabulous).

STEPS:

  1. Select a strip-friendly pattern like "Frosted Window Panes" from Villa Rosa.
  2. Select the fabric for the project in colors your friend would like (or at least you hope your friend will like).
  3. Cut the 2 1/2" strips (be sure to cut a small piece of each fabric and mark it according to where it is used in the pattern - I put a sticky note on each with the "Fabric A", "Fabric B", etc. and put them in with the pattern).
  4. Fold the strips in half lengthwise a few times until each of them is about 10" long.
  5. With the first strip, bring the ends together and overlap about an 1" and hand sew with a very long basting stitch (mine had 2 or 3 stitches across just to hold it until they are ready to take that link away)
  6. With all the subsequent links, put the next folded 10" strip through the link before and sew the ends together the same way as the first.
  7. Once you have all the links on you can present it to your friend with best wishes for a happy retirement, graduation, etc.

Have a wonderful weekend and week ahead!

Heidi
